Story
We will be running the Great North Run half marathon on September 9th 2018 to raise money for the Friends of the Leeds Centre for Leukaemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma. The 'Friends' is the short (and friendly!) title for a registered charity that has supported patients with blood cancers and other blood diseases in the Leeds area since 1979 by helping the patients themselves as well as their carers and staff based in the Haematology unit at St James's Hospital.
This area of medicine has undergone fantastic change in the decades that the Friends have been in existence but the treatments can still be long and hard for many - involving chemotherapy, radiation and bone marrow transplantation - all of which can be debilitating and require long periods in hospital. This is why the work of the charity is so important as it strives to make these difficult times as tolerable and supported as possible.
The charity is run entirely by volunteers and raises funds for a huge variety of things from patient comfort, support and help through to improving the unit's facilities, helping to develop skills and educate nursing and medical staff, and contributing to research in the field of blood disorders.
Thank you for your support in helping us to raise money to help the vital work of this charity in making such a significant difference to people's lives throughout such a difficult time.
