Our beautiful 9 year old son, Ethan was diagnosed with Stargardt Disease over a year ago.  I took him to the opticians to get his eyes tested thinking he needed glasses and after being referred to Moorfields found out 2 weeks later that he has Stargardt Disease and was losing his eyesight.

Stargardt Disease is a progressive inherited retinal disease that affects the central vision and over time he will find it difficult to do things we take for granted such as read, watch TV and even recognise faces. There is no cure for Stargardt at the moment.

 We have already noticed the impact of Stargardt on Ethan.

He can’t see the whiteboard at school or read his normal school books as the print is too small for him.  He struggles to find his friends in the playground as his eyesight deteriorates.

We are helplessly watching our son go blind and there is nothing we can do at the moment to stop it happening.

However, we have been fortunate to speak to many top doctors at Moorfields, and it’s a very exciting time at the moment. There is a lot of pioneering research underway such as gene therapy which could
revolutionise future treatment for blinding diseases like Stargardt.  

But of course one of the biggest hurdles is money. 

Despite the devastation and heartbreak of watching our son lose his eyesight, we have decided we want to do something positive and our aim is to now raise awareness of Stargardt Disease and to raise funds towards treatment for this and other blinding conditions.  Moorfields have been brilliant with Ethan and us as a family, and we are extremely thankful for the amazing work they do.
