"In January 2001 I was diagnosed with bowel cancer. After micro-surgery to remove the tumour I was told I'd 'dodged the bullet'. In February 2002 I was re-diagnosed with cancer. Since then I have had 3 major operations, numerous minor ones, 6 weeks of radiotherapy and something like 25 weeks of chemotherapy. In March 2004 I was told that I was incurable and in December that I was untreatable.
Throughout this time I and my family have used CancerBacup extensively for support and information.
I'm challenging myself to fly round the coast of Great Britain to raise money for CancerBacup. A double challenge really, because not only can I not fly an aeroplane, but I am also scared of heights.
In December my doctor told me that I had at most only 12 months to live.
This is my way of giving something back.
Thank you."
On Sunday 13 March 2005, Vic landed at Blackpool airport after taking 6 days to complete his challenge. He could not have completed this superb achievement alone, and thanks go mainly to friend and Pilot-in-Charge Leon Opit. Many others helped to make the flight a success in terms of raising so much money for CancerBACUP.
A celebration evening was held on Saturday 19 March for family, friends and supporters to applaud Vic's achevement. Although poorly, Vic was there all evening and thanked everyone for their support.
Sadly, Vic died at 11:50 on 20 March 2005.
