Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Allow me to introduce myself,as can be seen my name is Giles Evans, and i live in Bedlington,Northumberland.I was born in Llanelli,South West Wales.

I am a serving police officer with Northumbria police, and the reason for this event is in relation to an ex work colleague of mine Joan Smith, who sadly passed away through cancer in March of this year.

Joan was a support staff member who worked for over 20 years in the high pressure and emotionally challenging role of child protection. She retired in May 2009,having kept a healthy and active lifestyle. She looked forward to and was enjoying her retirement with her husband Ron.

In March 2010,Joan felt unwell and was admitted to hospital. After checks, she was diagnosed with incurable liver and bowel cancer, that two and a half weeks later took her life.

The challenge i have set myself,is to raise funds for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation,by cycling from Tyneside to Llanelli. This is called the TOON to TOWN challenge. Those that know Tyneside know it,s called the Toon and those that know Llanelli know it,s referred to as Town!

The event will start on Monday 4th October and end on Saturday 9th October.Using Sustrans routes, this will be a journey of 440 miles.

Breeze bikes of Amble have assisted greatly with the bikes and the maintenance of them

The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation has been chosen,as it is concerned with the treatment and early detection of cancer.

Upon arriving in Llanelli,I will arive at Parc y Scarlets on the morning of Saturday 9th October and take in the Scarlets v Perpignan European cup game...i think after nearly 400 miles I would have earned some leisure time!

This event is about a journey,a journey that i  am able to make. The funds that i hope to raise mean that the foundation can continue with their work to try and combat this terrible illness that affects so many people.Whilst i have highlighted the sad events relating to Joan,i am sure that people who read this know someone who has been affected by this illness.

I appreciate that in this current financial climate, money is tight, however if you do read this, and would like to donate, please do,as every penny donated ,will be donated to a charity, intent on detecting and treating cancer.

Thank you for spending the time reading this page, and trust that it has meant you have,or will donate to the TOON to TOWN challenge in aid of the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.
