Story
"Sometimes it takes a heavy dose of someone else’s reality to help you see just how fortunate you have been.”
Still on my "career break", my life revolves around the kids, exercise and charity work. In an effort to combine some of the above I have decided to take part in Yorkshire Warrior, a 10km outdoor obstacle race which makes perfect sense given I'm from Yorkshire and a warrior?!
I'm raising funds for Behind Closed Doors (BCD), a Leeds based charity supporting those affected by domestic violence and abuse in Leeds irrespective of the victim's sex.
BCD set up its Prevention and Recovery Service in 2012 and it's this area I'm looking to raise funds for as there is no statutory funding. The service specifically works with people still at low risk of harm who want to explore their options and prevent getting hurt, as well as those who are leaving, or have left, an abusive relationship but now find their lives unravelling badly as they come to terms with all the emotions and problems it has left them with.
Every £1,500 provides 70 more victims and their families with essential face to face community support sessions.
"My worker has given me the courage and the belief to know now that I am not mad, or useless, stuck or inconsequential: I am a 'me', who is beginning to believe in my strengths …Thank you for giving me this unexpected and wonderful opportunity to live a life that I neither anticipated nor dreamt could practically happen"
