Story
Liverpool Hope University has developed a Global Hope partnership with the Mountains of the Moon University (MMU) in Fort Portal, Uganda. This project has more recently been financially supported by Liverpool Hope University's Career Development department, thus a careers element has been integrated into the educational exchange.
There is a general feeling among MMU students that they are worried about the impact, or more importantly, the lack of impact studying their degree will have on their lives as they don’t know what to do with the qualification once they have it. The usual scenario is that graduates have continued in the jobs they had before and during their studies and that the degree has been an expensive waste of time for both them and their families.
In September 2010, two senior members of Hope's Career Development Team, Ginny Mair and Andy Nimmo, will be travelling to Uganda to set up and deliver an initial careers advice, guidance and information service for students at MMU and provide professional training to staff for the continued provision of this service.
The services of career guidance are based on the principle that the foundations of career management, for example, decision making, self-awareness and self-confidence skills, are developed at as early an age as possible. It is therefore a service to empower people to make a smooth transition from all educational levels to work and career progression. In universities, career guidance is tailored to the career development needs of the students and is closely connected to the wider curriculum.
It is proposed that USB memory sticks, which can be loaded with relevant careers information and given for free to students at the MMU, will be provided. These will include information on CV writing, compiling personal statements and tips on what employers are looking for in an application form and interview. Paper and printing are at a premium in , so this would negate the need for expensive provision whilst providing students with a useful tool for continued use.
By raising £2000 Ginny and Andy will be able to supply roughly 750 USB memory sticks; that's currently one for each student and a supply for the careers centre staff within the Mountains of the Moon University for the future.
Liverpool Hope's Careers Team is committed to providing ongoing careers support and training to both students and staff at MMU, Uganda.
