We provide practical and emotional support to those affected by cancer

Story

In August 2007, just days before the birth of our youngest daughter Poppy, one of our 3 year old twin daughters, Lily, was diagnosed with a malignant 'cancerous' brain tumour, 'Medulloblastoma'.

This life-threatening cancer had to be removed there and then, and in an operation lasting 8 hours, we were told that she could be left brain damaged, disabled or may not even make it, a time we will sadly never forget.

Lily pulled through, spending time in intensive care.

The nightmare which followed included Lily enduring lumbar punctures, 6 weeks of daily radiotherapy, 14 months of chemotherapy, sickness, eye drop, weak ankles, weight loss, memory loss, hearing changes, regular kidney checks and so on. She has been left with educational special needs and requires ongoing physiotherapy.

Lily is now registered disabled as a result of this horrific brain cancer.

Lily has lost friends along the way to cancer ... although as a 6 year old, she is unaware of this and simply believes that these youngsters have finished treatment and are therefore back at school, we wish!

Cancer Connections has been the only charity or organisation to offer ongoing support to our family as whole including immediate family i.e. myself, my wife and Lily's siblings, including therapies, counselling and cuddles. The team, all with personal experience of cancer, are at the end of a phone and can offer support on the spot, support which huge national charities and our own National Health Service cannot offer, or can, if you're added to the bottom of an ever-growing waiting list.

Keep thriving and growing Cancer Connections sadly you're a much needed charity within our community. A big thank you from me, Lily and all the Slater family x
