Story

We are two dog lovers... here go our stories...

Nina

I have always wanted a dog and when looking at breeds suitable for my living situation (apartment living in a big city!) I came across greyhounds. I had NO idea what lovely gentle docile friendly loving dogs they are. And I also had no idea about their plight as racing dogs.

I visited WGW to meet some greyhounds and...that was it - I was hooked! Now I help out as best as I can, with walking the dogs, training, socialising, bringing food donations and with Meet&Greet events where we talk to people about greyhounds as pets. I also wanted to help raise funds for unfortunate hounds who need vet treatment, either because they were treated badly or did not receive appropriate veterinary care when needed.

And I didn't leave it just there... I pulled Melissa into all of this ... admittedly, it didn't take much effort :) Here is why...

Melissa

I have always loved animals. I grew up on a farm in the US and my family has always had dogs. More recently, I adopted my own dog from a rescue earlier this year and I really love being a dog mom. When I found out that Nina (who has been a colleague and friend for a few years now) was a dog lover too, dogs basically become the basis of all our conversations! Nina educated me about greyhounds, and I visited the WGW with her to walk the hounds on the weekend. When she told me about this 10k, I couldn't help but say yes to this cause.

What is the cause you ask? Well - it is for sweet Moreen. She is the lovely greyhound on the main photo. Before coming to WGW, she suffered a fracture on her front leg and the fracture wasn't set properly. Her owners then split up and decided it is Moreen's best option to be brought back to a dog shelter. They called a few shelters but all of them said if they took Moreen, they would just amputate the leg.

But not Wimbledon Greyhound Welfare! They offered her a place and decided to pay for the corrective surgery to fix her leg, in full knowledge of the cost for the operation and ongoing rehabilitation until Moreen is back to full health.

You must give it to them - they are legends! The most compassionate, passionate people who truly care about animal welfare and do everything in their power to help these beautiful dogs.

Please show your support - not just for Moreen, but for such amazing compassionate people who work and volunteer for Wimbledon Greyhound Welfare!

We say "thank you" and Moreen says "woof"! :)
