Story
On Saturday 11th October 2014 I will be running 10K Men's Health Survival of the Fittest obstacle race in Nottingham, raising much needed funds for the Nottingham & Nottinghamshire Refugee Forum's Anti-Destitution Project. NNRF is a registered charity providing support and advice to refugees and asylum seekers. One of the organisation's services is the Anti-Destitution Project, which offers food and cash to around 100 destitute people a month funded entirely from voluntary donations and fundraising activities. The project strives to address their multiple needs through legal advice, small cash grants, weekly food parcels, hot meals and social activities. Asylum seekers become homeless within 3 weeks of their claim being refused and are not eligible to work or access any public funds. In effect, they end up in limbo having to submit a fresh claim or wait for the authorities to return them to their country of origin. In some cases this is not possible, as the country may be deemed unsafe for them. What is more, removals can take months if not years. As a result, many find themselves either 'sofa surfing' or end up destitute on the streets.
Here is a short video highlighting the causes of destitution amongst some asylum seekers in Nottingham, the problems they face and the help that is available to them. http://nottsrefugeeforum.org.uk/destitution-our-story/
I hope you will support this very worthwhile cause and give generously. Thank you in advance.
