Story
On the last week of August 2019 all of the Hayball children (aged 5 to 15) will be walking up and across Bleaklow to the site of the RB-29 Superfortress crash (in 1948) at Higher Shelf Stones. The children will be looking around the crash site and paying their respects. They will of course be accompanied by Mum and Dad!
Due to the complexity of the area we will be accompanied by a professional mountain leader who knows the area very well and used to be a mountain rescue volunteer.
Bleaklow is a high, largely peat-covered, gritstone moorland, just north of Kinder Scout, across the Snake Pass (A57), in the Derbyshire High Peak. Much of it is nearly 2,000 feet (610 m) above sea level- making it a mountain.
The walk will be challenging as the terrain is steep and uneven, however it will also be good fun.
Glossop Mountain Rescue do an amazing job in the area and save the lives of countless people each year. As regular visitors to the area we decided that it would be good to do some fundraising for them.
Please sponsor the children, they have lots of training ahead of them before this trek and really want to raise lots of money!
The exact date of the trek will be confirmed nearer the time as we will be selecting the day with the best weather to do it on. Bleaklow is not a nice place in heavy rain or fog!
