Story

In August, a group of 14 people from UK and NZ trekked to Everest Base Camp, Nepal,  on the 'Fred Trek' in memory of Fred Kahl who died last year. On the way we stayed in the small Himalayan village of Thame, hosted by the area's doctor who showed us the village health clinic. The village has a health worker who provides medical care for the local people, especially older people for whom the walk to the nearest hospital at Kunde is too far. She is from a village several days' walk away, and needs accommodation in the village. Dr Kami Temba wants to build a room attached to the clinic where she could live, and this would be done for a modest sum using local labour.

We appreciated the warmth and kindness of the Sherpa people and would like to assist Dr Temba with this project in Thame. (Thame is the childhood village of Tenzing Norgay who, with Sir Edmund Hillary, made the historic first ascent of Mt Everest.)

For me, turning 70 yrs in a month's time and joining the lower ranks of the elderly but being blessed with good health, it seemed appropriate to try and run a half marathon to support these beautiful older people in this remote Himalayan village which, incidentally, was completely razed to the ground by the 2015 earthquake. I am delighted to have David Best, Iro Konstantinou and Morrison Cleaver (PAH) support the charity (and me!) in this run on the 17th November.

We on the 'Fred Trek' made a video to support our fundraising:  Please click to watch....
