Hi,

We completed our ascent of Ben Nevis on Tuesday 24th Aug 2010.  We went a day early as we decided that as soon as the weather was good enough we would make an attempt so that we had a maximum number of contingency days if the weather turned.

We set out at 9:45am, reached the summit at 2pm, started our decent at 2:15pm and completed the walk at 5:40pm.  Time wise the ascent was in-line with expectations for novice climbers, but our return trip time was appalling - it took us nearly twice as long to get down than expected - after a detailed appraisal we have concluded that this was due to us being rubbish, well being unfit and rubbish.

We all found the climb really tough, and Julie and I found the decent just as hard as the ascent but rather than being tiring it just hurt our joints.  The children bounded down the mountain no problem and kept on having to wait for us to catch up.

The weather was rain on the ascent and once in the cloud it was freezing and 25mph winds, so pretty awful conditions.  It was hard to see the path which was a little unnerving because there are some cliff edges very close to the path on the summit plateau.  On the decent it was very pleasant weather once below cloud level.

We are so grateful to all of you that sponsored us; you have been so kind and generous.  By the time RWE has chipped in with its sizeable donation and with the beauty of Gift Aid, a donation of nearly double our target will be made in Dan's name to CLIC Sargent.

Thank you and best regards.

Hi,

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

My family and I are going to attempt to climb Ben Nevis on Wednesday 25th August.

Now I know compared to some challenges people have faced this may appear rather tame, but please bear in mind a). Statistically climbing Ben Nevis is more dangerous than climbing Everest, and b). With my current level of fitness I have trouble climbing the stairs.

Added to this, my wife will be most concerned that her footwear remains clean and sparklely throughout the hike, my daughter will decide half way up that she needs the toilet and any facilities less luxurious than those found in a hotel couldn't possibly be considered, and my son will ask every 100m 'Did a climber meet his doom here?', 'or here?', 'what about here?' Etc. I am sure you get the picture...

The SMALL print - Since you are hopefully going to agree to part with some of your hard earned cash before I actually get to Scotland let alone climb anything (its not like in my day when we used to complete the task before asking for money - I do struggle with these modern times!) anyway, as I was saying, since I am asking for your money up front I need to say that if the local authorities declare the conditions unsafe for an ascent then my wife and children will not climb it, but I won't leave Scotland before I do.

So, having read all that, if you could sponsor us just a few pounds we would be very grateful.

All monies will be donated to the charity supported by the family of our much missed work colleague Dan Morris. Dan's family have told us that from their own personal experience families really do benefit from CLIC Sargent's help.

Thank you and best regards,

Ian, Julie, Becky and Matthew Loveday
