Story

Hello,

You’re probably here because I’ve been pestering you to donate!

As you may or may not know I’m competing in the 2010 Clacton Olympic Distance Triathlon, in memory of Danny Nield.

I was lucky enough to serve alongside Danny who was a member of my Fire Support Team on our tour of Afghanistan. This was his second 6 month tour of Afghanistan, in 18 months; which he volunteered for.

Danny was working with a small team of British soldiers tasked with training and mentoring the Afghan National Army. On the 31st January 2009 whilst on patrol in northern Helmand, during an engagement with enemy forces, Danny was killed.

It was mine, and everyone else’s pleasure who served with Danny to have worked, fought, laughed and mourned alongside him. His truly selfless actions, repeated on numerous occasions, have ensured that both British and Afghani soldiers are here today.

This is my very, very small tribute to Danny and I hope to raise funds for the Army Benevolent Fund. This charity helps injured soldiers in their everyday lives, and following ever increasing numbers of injured soldiers needs your donations more than ever. For details of the work they do please visit their website: http://www.soldierscharity.org

The triathlon in which I’m competing involves a 1.5 km swim (in the balmy North Sea), followed by 40 km on my trusty bike before a final 10 km run.

So please dig deep, and remember if you donate on the website an additional 28% is added to your donation.

Thank you

Rupert
