Hi, my name is Jack Sherman and I go to Camp Equinunk. This would have been my 4th summer at camp. I am going to have my Bar Mitzvah this November and have been thinking for a while about what I wanted to do for my Bar Mitzvah Project, searching for a cause that felt meaningful to me. Not having the chance to go to camp this summer because of Covid has made me think of all of the kids who never get the chance to go to camp. I decided that I wanted to raise money for an organization that would help send less fortunate kids to summer camp. Camp means so much to me, and I have learned so much in my three years at camp. I have learned to be more independent from my parents, to be a good sport above all else, to be a productive and kind member of a community, and the importance of tradition. I think every kid deserves the opportunity to go to camp and learn these valuable lessons that I know will stay with me forever. When researching organizations that would help me achieve this goal, I found SCOPE (Summer Camp Opportunities Promote Education). SCOPE is a non-profit organization that sends underprivileged kids ages 7-16 who are enrolled in public school or public charter school to nonprofit resident camps across the country. Once I found SCOPE, I just had to think of a way to raise money. During the quarantine I have found that I really enjoy running (I have run over 250 miles since the start of quarantine!), and so I wanted to tie in running to my Mitzvah project. 

On August 8th I will be holding a virtual 5k race to raise money for SCOPE. Each runner (or family) will make a donation as their entry fee and all of the money raised will be donated to SCOPE. I am asking for a $10 donation per runner, or $25 donation for a family of runners. Feel free to donate more if you want -- it's a great cause! 

Participants can run or walk the 3.1 miles at any time on August 8th, wherever they choose. Each participant will get an email with a printable running bib. I would love for everyone to take pictures with their bib and post to social media, not only can we raise money for SCOPE but we can also raise awareness too! My goal is to raise $3,900 which would be enough money to change three kid's lives by sending them to summer camp next year.
