A family of a good friend of mine have been affected by Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and have been doing a fantastic job in raising money for Action Duchenne! In June I will gladly be joining in with them by participating in a Fire walk, which is walking on hot coals in my bare feet!!

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

The most common lethal genetic disorder, affecting one in 3,500 male births. There are between 1500 and 2500 boys and young adults living with the condition in the UK, which is a severe and degenerative muscle wasting disease. It is caused by a defect in the gene which produces dystrophin, essential for muscle function. The disease programme with weakening of the proximal muscles, ultimately leading to complete paralysis. The lack of dystrophin in the respiratory and cardiac muscles leads to life expectancy in the late teens or early twenties. There is no cure or treatment to halt or reserve the onset of Duchenne which is predictable progressive and life limiting.
