So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
On Sunday 9 September my Team will be walking over the Forth Road Bridge to raise funds for the Clinical Genetics Endowment Fund at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh. Both my mother and younger sister Elizabeth had Neurofibromatosis - whereby seemingly benign tumours become malignant. Having lost both my mother and sister to this condition, raising awareness of this issue is something I feel very strongly about.
All monies raised go towards funding Specialist Nurses training. This will mean educators and employers can understand how those with the condition are affected. In terms of prevalence; Nf1 affects 1:2500 whereas Nf2 affects 1:35000. Nf is a hereditary condition, meaning the likelihood of passing relevant genes onto offspring occurs at chance level. Yet, it can also occur through spontaneous mutation where no family member is afflicted and like many spectrum conditions also ranges from mild to extreme.
I myself have Nf1 and attend reviews at the Western General Hospital and the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh annually. Having worked with Legal Firms in a Cashroom for over 30 years, I found the work increasingly pressurised. When a Specialist Nurse came into Tods Murray and explained my condition to our Personnel Department, my job was changed to suit my needs. This made a tremendous difference to my health and it would be wonderful to think that other people could benefit from the same understanding as I have received.
Thank you
Kind Regards
Jennifer
