National Three Peaks Challenge - 2010
In June (11-12th), I will be taking the National Three Peaks challenge. This involves :-
- climbing over 10,000 feet,
- walking over 25 miles
- ascending and descending the three highest summits of Scotland, England and Wales
- in under 24 hours and with very little sleep, cramped up in a sweaty van !!!
As part of a 6 man team attempting this challenge, we will be raising funds on behalf of Willowbrook Hospice in Merseyside.
Willowbrook Hospice cares for people with life-limiting illnesses living in the St Helens and Knowsley area. As a Charity, Willowbrook makes no charge for its services, but relies on fundraising efforts such as this and a modest contribution from the NHS. This enables the Hospice to provide support to patients and their families according to their individual needs.
Three years ago, my father in law spent the last 24 hours of his life in Willowbrook and the care he received along with the care provided to his family was exceptional. I have always felt compelled to give something back to Willowbrook in his memory. He was a very keen fell walker and I had suggested the 'Three Peaks' as a challenge several years prior to his illness. He dismissed this out of hand saying that I wouldn't be able to do it.
So there it was - the perfect challenge. To prove him wrong and at the same time raise money in his memory for this very special facility.
Following a successful ascent of Ben Nevis with friends in 2009, I planted the seed of undertaking the 'Three Peaks Challenge' as we nursed our aching feet with a well deserved pint. The rest as they say is history and the hard work has begun to get in shape for this gruelling challenge.
Now the hard bit. We have set an equally challenging target for fundraising. Any support you can give to help us achieve this would be extremely welcome. Knowing that we have such a responsibility to successfully complete the challenge will drive our motivation throughout, particularly as the going gets tough in the thick of night !!!
Cheers : o )
