Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my page.

I’m John Pickard, otherwise known as Dom from Hollyoaks, and I’m fresh from taking on three running challenges this year - the Flora London Marathon, the BUPA Great North Run and the ING New York Marathon. I'm raising funds for two amazing charities; Leonard Cheshire Disability and The Prostate Cancer Charity, both of which are causes very close to my heart.

For the past few months, I have been offering anyone who sponsors me the chance to meet me on the set of Hollyoaks! I want to give a huge thanks to everyone who dug deep in their pockets and I am pleased to announce that a name was drawn at random and the winner is ..... Kathryn Withers! Well done Kathryn, I will look forward to meeting you soon.

When I was growing up my Grandad came to live with my family because his health had deteriorated and my Mum became his main carer. Leonard Cheshire Disability support disabled people to live life their own way and as independently as possible, but they also support those who care for disabled relatives or partners, which is why I chose to support them.

Leonard Cheshire Disability is a charity that works to better the lives of disabled people all around the world. They provide services to support disabled people in their daily lives and the charity also provides innovative services for disabled people to get into work or start their own business. It is a fantastic charity that I’ve supported for over a year, running the BUPA Great North Run last year and the FLORA London Marathon for them this year. I think it’s safe to say I’ve caught the running bug!

My Grandad was also diagnosed with prostate cancer, which is the most common cancer in men in the , however it doesn’t seem to get the same level of attention that other cancers do. I want to do my bit to help change this and so I have joined forces with The Prostate Cancer Charity to get the word out there that 10,000 men are dying of this disease every year in the – that’s one man every hour. The Charity is fighting prostate cancer through funding research, supporting men and their families affected by the disease, providing information and campaigning for high quality health care services. We all need to know about prostate cancer and so we should all get talking about it!

Thank you,

John Pickard
