I did it!
Re: El Camino de Santiago - Mission Accomplished!
I’m still recovering from my ordeal but it was well worth it. Thanks to your donations I’ve already raised past the £100 original target for Cancer Research and still rising.
The route went throughout the of for
154.7 Kilometers or 96 Miles. The countryside in this region is incredibly beautiful, full of greenery and panoramic views. Some of the villages are like a journey back in time to the medieval ages and the food in is one of the best in .
As for the physical effort it was something brutal. Even I got taken by surprise. There were several casualties on a daily basis. There were emergency services at 'key points' (although they couldn’t reach a great part of the route). A woman trekking alone went missing. On day 5 (from Palas de Rei to Arzua) the route stretched very steep uphill and downhill 30 kilometers under scorching temperatures of near 40°(Celsius). On day 6 (from Arzua to Pedrouzo) we entered a dense forest, quite sinister, and were hit by a violent thunder storm. This is a very superstitious region (people were looking out for witches). Some pilgrims later reported to be hit by hailstones.
The entire journey was full of challenges: Blisters, cuts, mosquitoes, muscle ache, early wake-ups at 5:00am, extremely basic accommodation (sleeping on the floor) and walking for hours on end (up and down hill). Still it was a beautiful experience that none of us will ever forget. I recommend it to
most people (definitelly not those of a weak condition).
