In memory of Ka Chiu Wong
We support children to talk and understand words

Story

On Thursday 27th April 2023, we lost Ka Chiu Wong. Instead of floral tributes, a charity donation would be much appreciated.

I have chosen Speech and Language UK because of my brother, Stephen, who has a speech and language disorder. As a child in the 80's/90's, I think it was hard for him and my parents to find and obtain the right and necessary support.

My father, Ka Chiu Wong, was devoted to my brother, so he would be pleased to know that we are helping other children who struggle like Stephen in his memory.

Thank you for your kindness, generosity, love, and support.

31st May 2023 update: We passed £1000! Incredible. This is an amazing legacy to leave in Ka Chiu's memory. To help you realise how amazing, I asked Speech and Language UK how this money will help children like Stephen. They replied:

"We want to extend our thanks again for all your support, and for choosing to raise money for Speech and Language UK as part of such a special tribute. We’re also thrilled to report that your fundraising total has surpassed an amazing £1,000 now – this is incredible and really means a lot, so thank you.

  1. Covid-19 and the lockdowns it has entailed have had a huge impact on children’s development. Over the course of the pandemic the average child has missed 84 school days. As well as impacting their education, this decrease in social contact has contributed to more than 1.7 million children across the UK struggling with speaking and understanding language right now.  Without support, these children will be held back in life. A Talk Boost intervention costs only £28 per child but can make all the difference to a child’s prospects later in life.  Our Talk Boost programmes can help most children to improve their speaking and understanding, with half catching up with their peers after 8-10 weeks.
  1. £30 is all it takes for a family to have a personal call with one of our expert, compassionate speech and language advisors via Speech and Language UK’s Enquiry Service. This free, confidential helpline is available across the UK and open to anyone worried about their child’s speaking and understanding words.  The Enquiry Service offers invaluable emotional support, high-quality yet accessible information, eminently actionable strategies and resources that genuinely improve children’s and families’ quality of life. Parents have provided some wonderful feedback about the service:

Absolutely wonderful. Beyond helpful. Life changing for my son. I used all of the methods recommended and definitely notice a big difference. I felt very empowered after my conversation.

  1. £250 could pay for the cost of an Occupational Therapist at one of our schools for a whole day, helping our children develop essential cognitive, physical, and motor skills.
  1. A Talk Boost Intervention Pack costs £500 and gives a whole school the opportunity to support groups of 6-8 children at a time with a tried & tested targeted programme that bring tangible benefit within weeks.  The schools keep the pack, so they can use it over and over again, with a fantastic multiplier effect (of your gift)."
