Kinley's BEN NEVIS TREK
Fundraising for Group B Strep Support
Story
Group B Streptococcus is the UK's most common cause of life-threatening infection in newborn babies and of meningitis in babies under age 3 months. On average in the UK - one baby a day develops group B Strep infection- one baby a week dies from group B Strep infection- one baby a fortnight who survives their group B Strep infection is left with long-term disabilityYet most group B Strep infections are preventable. Group B Strep Support informs families & health professionals about group B Strep to save tiny lives.
On the 26 August 2010 my daughter Lilly was born! She was an 8 lb 8 bundle of joy unknown to us Lillys mother had contracted group B streptococcus infection during labour which was left undetected resulting in Lilly developing the infection .
Like most families and first time parents we had never heard or knew anything about this infection and the devastating consequences that layed ahead which would change our lives for ever.
Being more fortunate than others which result in fatality Lilly was left with long term disabilities such as cerabal palsy ,delayed development, scoliosis of the spine,hip displaysia ,reflux resulting in many other conditions and health profesional appointments .
Even with these conditions Lilly is a happy child always thriving to accomplish her next goal and a very determined young lady.
In the Uk women are not routinely offered testing for group B strep,unlike in many other developed countries.
My view is if we can create more awareness about this life threatening GBS infection we together can stop new borns from transmitting the infection all together .
So I have chose to trek BEN NEVIS with two of my closest friends Mark mcewan and Ziggy Matheson to raise funds for this charity.
Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in the British Isles ,located in Scotland .standing 1,346 meteres above sea level (4,414 ft) I am not the kind of person that asks anyone for anything but I am asking now .
With donations raised by you and determination of my team we could save a family going through the heart brake and experience we and many other families have been through .
Every donation counts .
