Story
2nd Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles are currently working alongside African Parks and the Department of National Parks and Wildlife in Liwonde National Park, Malawi, to assist in countering the illegal Wildlife trade.
It has been a great partnership thus far with many successes. Highlights have included the rescue of an injured pangolin, fighting large bush fires for a number of days alongside our fellow rangers and saving the life of a pregnant lady (baby doing well) who had been caught up in human-elephant conflict. It has been a collaborative approach throughout and we have formed great bonds with our counterparts in African Parks. We have been humbled by what this great organisation is doing for the World’s protected areas and as we come towards the end of our time, here in Malawi, we want to ensure we leave behind a lasting legacy.
Happy Readers is an organisation that operates out of Zimbabwe that creates children’s books to improve literacy levels in Africa. The books promote conservation through their brightly coloured stories. The children will learn about the wonderful animals around them, the brave work of Rangers and the negative impacts of poaching. It will ensure that the hard work that African Parks is doing in Liwonde National Park (that we have been privileged to have played a small role in) will be maintained by the next generation of conservationists.
900,000 people live around Liwonde National Park and £5000 will ensure schools around Liwonde National Park have access to these wonderful books.
