Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I am running the Edinburgh Half Marathon in memory of my Mother-in-Law, Diane Janes, who died in September 2017. Diane was an active supporter of the Berwickshire Group of Riding for the Disabled.
Berwickshire Group started in 1982 and has run continuously ever since. At the moment they have 40 riders and equestrian vaulter's working on horses and the Mechanical Horse. They are aged from 5 to 65 with a great variety of disabilities and they are helped by 40 volunteers and 6 horses. Diane was part of the Monday vaulting session and she was - 'brilliant with difficult little boys giving them a strong framework to live with'.
For some of Berwickshire Group RDA's clients the horse is the only animal they have contact with and strong bonds develop. Sitting on the horse improves balance, coordination, core stability and exercise. Working with the volunteers helps with cooperation, taking instruction, language, conversation, memory, team work and friendship and often this spills over into school and home life.
They receive no national funding.
They need funding to feed, shoe and give vet attention to their horses, to upkeep the building and to make sure their equipment is up to date and safe.
