Story

As the majority of you know by now we are going to be doing a bike ride from London (Clapham Common Trinity Hospice) to Devon (Exeter Hospice) on the 2nd weekend in September. The exact dates are as follows:

Depart London - Thursday 10th September @ c 08.00hrs
Arrive Exeter - Sunday 13th September

This is for a fantastic cause which will be to raise money for Exeter hospice who looked after our Aunt Sue in her last months before she passed away on Christmas day. For those of you who do not know what a hospice does then please read the info below:

"You matter because of who you are. You matter to the last moment of your life, and we will do all we can , not only to help you die peacefully, but also to live until you die". --Dame Cicely Saunders

Hospice is a philosophy of care. The hospice philosophy or viewpoint accepts death as the final stage of life. The goal of hospice is to enable patients to continue an alert, pain-free life and to manage other symptoms so that their last days may be spent with dignity and quality, surrounded by their loved ones. Hospice affirms life and does not hasten or postpone death. Hospice care treats the person rather than the disease; it focuses on quality rather than length of life. It provides family-centered care and involves the patient and the family in making decisions. Care is provided for the patient and family 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Hospice care can be given in the patient's home, a hospital, nursing home, or private hospice facility.

In Sue's case, they also provided a special car so that she could be transported with as much ease and little pain as possible. She had round-the-clock care and was made as comfortable as possible. As many of you know it was a matter of months from diagnosis to the day the Sue passed away and the Hospice team got everything together in record time. We have set up a fund in Sue's name to make sure that others benefit from the care and attention that she got during her last months.

Most of the trip will be spent camping in the evenings, Sue's husband Tug will drive ahead to the designated camping sites and make sure that all of the tents are set up for our arrival, he will also have food and warm drinks ready each evening.

On arrival in Exeter they have arranged for local press and News to be there at the hospice.  They will put on a nice reception for us with food and drinks and then we will go out for a few celebratory before heading back to London the next day.

The plan is to get fit - have fun and raise a bit of money.
We will drive the bike route a few times before we leave so that we are very familiar and Teresa Wilson we be driving along with us in case of any emergencies and to make sure that no one speeds past us - she will have water and snacks with her.

We honestly believe that it will be an enjoyable experience and with a big group of us and a few drinkies along the way it will be a fun trip with friends and family remember the wonderful woman that Sue was.
