Story

Hello and big thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

UPDATE:

WELL, WE DID IT! IT WAS A GOOD OLD SLOG AND *DARN* COLD AT THE TOP, BUT WE MADE IT. HALLELUJAH!

THANKS SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT. IT REALLY HELPED US CONQUER BIG BAD BEN'S STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN!

YOURS TRULY, JELLY LEGS SUGRUE XXXX

My sister Helen and I are climbing the UK's highest mountain (Ben Nevis, 4406 feet) at the end of the month to raise money for the Alzheimer's Society.

The organisation does great work and has become close to our hearts, especially since Mum was diagnosed with dementia some years ago.

Below are some facts and figures* which might help you decide about whether to support us. We hope you will give as much as you can.

Neither Helen or I are the most experienced of climbers, but we have willingly undertaken some 'training'. Helen rather impressively climbed Skiddaw in the Lake District recently; and I have run up the office stairs a few times! Oh and I walked around Glendalough in the Wicklow Mountains last month. (And Mount Sinai (7497 feet) in 2006; and Snowdon when I was 11, but I can't really count that!)

In the meanwhile, have a butcher's at the Ben Nevis webcam. Look on Sat 29th May and you may well see us on it!

Feel free to forward my page to anyone you know who would like to contribute to valuable research that might make a difference to maybe even ourselves, future generations, our friends and families.

Big love and big thanks,

*Facts and figures - for more please go to www.alzheimers.org.uk website also www.lewybody.org/

  • Alzheimer's Society pioneered public involvement in dementia research. They work with the scientific community in partnership with people affected by dementia, and currently invest over £6 million in dementia research.

Dementia research is seriously under-funded. The government invests eight times less in dementia research than cancer research.

Alzheimer's Society has funded over 100 research projects in leading scientific institutions across the UK. This research falls into four main categories: cause, cure, care & prevention.

  • There are currently 750,000 people with dementia in the UK.
  • The proportion of people with dementia doubles for every 5 year age group.
  • Delaying the onset of dementia by 5 years would reduce deaths directly attributable to dementia by 30,000 a year.
  • The financial cost of dementia to the UK is over £20 billion a year.
  • Family carers of people with dementia save the UK over £6 billion a year.
  • Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), also known as Lewy body disease, is the second most frequent cause of age-related neurodegenerative dementia. At least 5 percent of people aged 85 and older are thought to suffer from this little known but not uncommon devastating disease. In the UK approximately 100,000 are thought to suffer from DLB.
