Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.  Mahmood is running 10K and Shamin is walking 5K as part of the AKF Walk and Run at the European Sports Festival on Friday 19th April.

AKF as part of AKDN works to improve the quality of life of marginalised communities without regard to faith, origin or gender.

The people of North-East Afghanistan face an unprecedented challenge

Extreme weather exacerbated by climate change threatens the people of North-East Afghanistan. As climate change intensifies, scientists predict weather patterns will become more volatile.

The people of North-East Afghanistan have few resources to combat the impact of climate change, and need specialist help.

They live in rural areas that are already exposed to a harsh climate. Heat waves, floods, droughts and reduced snow capping, which causes glacial lake outburst floods, result in the destruction of property, crop failure, erosion of vital farmland and loss of life.

AKF has partnered with the EU Commission to help 420,000 people

Together with the European Commission, AKF will work with the communities in North-East Afghanistan to help improve their resilience to the impact of the changing climate and develop sustainable ecosystems. Working mainly with women and youth in affected areas, the project will help 60,000 families - around 420,000 people.

The project will help people to improve farming techniques; develop physical barriers against natural disasters; rehabilitate vital forests; and develop new crops and farmland.

And it will be sustainable. AKF and the European Commission will develop local expertise so that important skills can continue to be shared between communities.

Your donations go a long way

For every £1 raised, the European Commission will donate £9 to the project. And 100% of all money raised goes directly to the project.

For example, a donation of £10 becomes £100 for the project. That's enough to provide year-round access to water for a family, or provide drought resistant crops to 100 households.

A donation of £20 becomes £200 for the project. That's enough to plant 1000 trees that will support new livelihood opportunities and prevent soil erosion, or help form and train a womens' group to lead reforestation.

Your donations will help ensure the people of North-East Afghanistan have a safer future.

Thank you for your support!
