Story

Maggie Gage, 22 from Port Talbot, is a carer working for the RMBI in their Porthcawl Care Home. Her ambition is to become a Registered Mental Nurse. She is one of 12 Volunteers from the Sea Cadets who will be joining 12 yachts in the 13/14 Round the world Clipper Race at leg six

She applied for the race with the Sea Cadets as it's a once in a lifetime opportunity, and never expected to be successful in her application. She says, “I received the email from the Sea Cadets about the opportunity, it seemed too good to be true and assumed it was junk and was going to give it a miss. I do, however, have a lot to thank my brother Tom, who is a serving member of the Royal Navy, for, as he persuaded me to take it at face value and apply.

I'm really looking forward to the challenge, the training has been tough and it is fair to say that I enjoyed every moment of it, however, I feel that it has given me a good grounding for the task ahead. I do have boating qualifications through the Sea Cadets, but, being part of a crew sailing a 70ft yacht is a whole new ball game and a very new and exciting experience. It is fair to say that you have to work as a team member on board as no task can be completed unless everyone pulls to get her to get the work done. It was also amazing to see how quickly a bunch of complete strangers were thrown together and became not only crew members but good friends who will live long in the memory well after the race has been run.

I feel privileged to have been chosen and to have met such courageous people.”

I am now in the process of trying to raise the cost of £1,500

I would like to take you all in advance for you support and especially my Family and close friends..
