Story
From the 12-16 March, I participated in the Junior League of London's 5th Annual Little Black Dress Initiative poverty-awareness fundraiser - a local cause I helped get started five years ago that is now an international campaign.
1. To highlight the story of those in need who have few resources, i.e., interview clothes and work clothes, to enter the employment process and to remain at work;
2. To understand how limited resources can affect daily life; and
3. To fundraise for our incredible projects within the London community.
The JLL provides the (wo)manpower for community partners hosting soup kitchens, literacy programs, tutoring in schools, counselling for at-risk youth and refugees and more to help alleviate the affect of poverty on Londoners.
£5 will buy books for our reading club or a meal for 4 homeless people at one of our soup kitchens.
£10 will buy a taxi to deliver office wear to Smart Works and Suited and Booted, who provide professional clothing and CV and interview assistance to women and men who are homeless or living in poverty.
£15 will buy a cooking lesson for 6 at risk young women at Dashwood House, where we teach monthly meals on a budget and provide English lessons.
£20 will pay for lunch for 6 refugees and migrants at a day long CV and interview preparation seminar and training session.
We also support these programs with financial contributions. You can learn more about The LBDI and our programs at https://www.jll.org.uk/one-dress-one-vision-five-days/.
