You may or may not know but earlier this year my brother Iain was diagnosed with a brain tumour for the second time in 4 years. The previous diagnosis led to a successful treatment by radiotherapy but this time the tumour had spread and was on the brain stem so radiotherapy was not suitable. The hospital were reluctant to start chemotherapy until Iain was alert enough to deal with it. The chemotherapy was only likely to have a 10 percent chance of success and would not give any benefit for the first 3 weeks by which time it could have been too late. Fortunately after some meetings with the hospital the treatment was signed off (partly due to the fact that Iain proved how alert he was by breaking out of the ward and running off to a local pub for a crafty pint), and recent scans have shown considerable improvements (touch wood). The best thing is that he has put on 3 stone in weight due to a combination of steroids and cookies and now fits perfectly into my Dad’s jeans, causing endless amusement to me! To show my support to Iain I have decided to jump in the sea at Redcar on Boxing day in a snakeskin suit (I can think of no better way to show my support). Pictures of previous dips can be seen at http://alanformstone.com/images/boxing_day/piper.htmlIain has asked that any donations raised are passed to a brain tumour charity called Hammerout (http://www.hammerout.co.uk/) who provide support and care for sufferers and research into treatment and I know that any donations would be gratefully received.
