The Maxwell Mallows Brighter Future Fund

James Mallows is raising money for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity
In memory of Maxwell Mallows
We are Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity. We stop at nothing to help give seriously ill children childhoods that are fuller, funner and longer. Because we believe no childhood should be lost to illness.

Story

Maxwell Mallows was born in September 2016 with restrictive
cardiomyopathy, which is a form of heart disease that causes the heart muscle to become stiff. The only treatment for restrictive  cardiomyopathy is a heart transplant.

At the age of 1, Maxwell was referred to Great Ormond Street
Hospital (GOSH)
, where he was listed for a heart transplant. We were made aware that children of his age wait around 2 years before receiving the transplant.
In July 2018, Maxwell suffered a stroke. We stayed at GOSH for 3 weeks while he recovered however the stroke left him unable to use his right arm.

Over the next few months, GOSH adjusted medication, and Maxwell underwent procedures to try and relieve some of his symptoms to enable him to live a normal life of a 2-year-old.

In January 2019, Maxwell attended GOSH for a check-up, however his team of doctors decided he needed to be admitted. The decision was
made for Maxwell to be placed on a Bi-Vad device called Berlin Heart.

The Berlin Heart is a mechanical assist device which takes over the pumping of the heart on the outside of the body. This allowed Maxwell’s own heart to rest, while he could become stronger and his other organs to stay healthy during the wait for his transplant. The Berlin heart means living at GOSH, and because of that, means being placed on the urgent
transplant list.

During his time at GOSH Maxwell attended the hospital school, he had music sessions, play specialists providing him with activities. Anything he wanted, they made it possible. (Even a visit from Arsenal’s Gunnersaurus!)

In July 2019 Maxwell, suffered another severe stroke, which we knew was the major risk of the Berlin Heart. This stroke sadly damaged so
much of his brain that he would have no quality of life, which in turn, meant Maxwell was no longer eligible for a transplant. As his parents we had to agree that his Berlin Heart was stopped. At 2 years and 10 months old, he passed away.

All monies raised will go directly to the Maxwell Mallows Brighter Future Fund at Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity
