The Merseyside JLD's nominated charity for 2009 is Liverpool Teenage Cancer Trust.
The Teenage Cancer Trust is a national charity which provides support and facilities dedicated to teenagers and young adults up to 24 years of age who have been diagnosed with cancer. Young people can suffer from the most aggressive forms of cancer as their rapidly growing bodies can work against them, enabling the cancer to grow faster. The Teenage Cancer Trust understands that teenage cancer requires specialist care, and that if young people are treated by teenage cancer experts, and in an environment tailored to their needs, they have a much better chance at their fight against cancer.
The Liverpool Teenage Cancer Trust currently consists of a 4 bed and 2 treatment chair unit at Alder Hey hospital. At the end of Summer 2009 there will be a new 4 bed unit opening at Clatterbridge. This unit will be dedicated to 16-24 year olds and the younger teenagers will continue to receive their treatment at Alder Hey. As the charity receives no government support it is vital that they obtain donations to keep these units running successfully.
