Story

27th April 2010

Well I did it!!!!!!!

Hardest thing that I have ever ever ever done in my life.!!!!  The day started with a shower at the start!!  I managed to cross the start line 25 mins after the race had started.  I was stuck in the miles and miles of runners that you would have seen on T.V (if you watched).  The support from the crown was amazing.  I ran with donkeys, giant nurses, a tin man, Thomas the tank engine, umpteen Mr Men, batman and robin, lots of fairy’s’ a bear bottle (not in my hand, a man dressed up!!).  I passed two camels a man carrying a fridge!! I ask you, why would you carry a fridge?!?!?!, it was not even plugged in!!!  There were lots of fire men, army men, ambulance men (maybe they were picking up people at the side of the road!).

The highlight was when I saw my family at mile 12, still feeling fresh as a daisy by then, they handed me my grapes and off I went on the final half, (well just over).  I consumed so much running gel that I thought I may pop.  Mile 22 was a real turning point for me.  Gone was all the gel energy, with no more gel I was feeling very low and the last four miles may have well been 44 miles.  I picked myself up and remembered why I was doing it, through tears I pushed on.  When I was running up the road just behind The Mall and could see Buck House in front of me I knew that I could make it.  One last push to the end……….I saw a friend from work franticly waving as I approached the finish line, crying with pain I crossed at 04.57.58.

It was an amazing day and I was blessed to have been given the opportunity to run for Ovarian Cancer research.  Thank you all for supporting me with your kind donations.

Less than three weeks to go and the nerves are really starting to kick in.  I have trained and trained and I have completed my last long run a cool 20 miles on Good Friday.  All there is to do now is keep myself motivated by pittering off my training and then wait for the 25th April.

Thank you to all who have supported in aide of this very good cause.  My next update will be post race with my feet in a bowel of water.!!

This year I will run my first ever London marathon in aid of research into ovarian cancer.  I work as a research nurse with Professor Rustin ( a world leader in ovarian cancer) for the past 18 months.  The course of my work has brought me into contact with many patients and their families who live with ovarian cancer.  I am often humbled by the courage shown by them in the face of adversity and I am amazed at patient's and family's selfless acts of kindness during such stressful times in their lives.

I am running this marathon to help raise runds to improve the treatment for the hundreds of women I have treated and the thousands of women I will meet over the coming years.   You never know if your life will be touched by ovarian cancer but,  if it is, I hope that one day we will have better, more effective treatments to offer.  Your donations will help support the research into improving treatments into ovarian cancer.

This is such a small milestone for me to achieve in comparison to the life stuggles I have witnessed.  At the end of the marathon (I will finish even if I have to walk!!!) my personal sense of achievement will not only be for the miles I have covered but also for the women whose lives I can help change with the money that I raise

Please give as much as you can to this worthwhile cause..
