Story

Here we are again but this time I am really really un-prepared!!!

I have taken on the challenge to walk/run the Virtual London Marathon  I have completed no training and am carrying excess baggage BUT am willing to do something my Dan has not been able to do since he was 12 years old

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a muscle wasting disorder which can be hereditary or can be a genetic mutation. As we already had Adam, Dan’s older brother, I think we noticed something different in the way Dan moved when he was about 2 and a half.

We mentioned this to our Health Visitor who although said Dan looked OK was wise enough to send him for blood tests at our local hospital. When we received a phone call on a Saturday from the consultant asking us to come in on Monday, we figured it wouldn’t be good news.

We were told that Dan had Muscular Dystrophy but would need further tests to establish which type.  Dan had a muscle biopsy, taken from his thigh, under sedation, which was majorly traumatic as he was only 3 and kept trying to get off the theatre bed before and after!!

The results were that he had Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.  This is the most common and the most severe and life limiting MD.  We, of course were devastated for our beautiful son.

After a period of reaching out to parents who had already walked on the journey we would also tread we came across the DFSG.

Although there are other MD charities out there, DFSG offers something very unique. The main aim is to help subsidise holidays and days out to make memories for our boys and their families..

We have had many happy holidays with the DFSG and although Dan now has become too anxious to leave our home we will be eternally grateful for all the memories we have made, all the wonderful people we have met and all the knowledge we share as we are all at different stages of this very rocky path we must take.

I haven’t trained, I haven’t walked for months but every step I take, I will take for my inspirational, funny, amazing, gorgeous son, Dan who teaches me every day how to be a better human being xx

Any donation be it 50p or £5000 ;) will be sooooo gratefully received. I have 24hrs to complete 26.2 miles and I will crawl it if necessary!!!

For my son, Dan and all the other amazing DMD warriors!!!

The DFSG helps families affected by Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a muscle-wasting condition mainly affecting boys. The condition results in decreasing mobility and muscle strength with limited life expectancy (usually to mid-20s). We provide a helpline, support, and organise social events.
