Story
Island lorikeet subspecies on the brink
In recent decades the Mitchell’s Lorikeet (Trichoglossus haematodus mitchellii) has suffered a steep decline in population on Lombok, with numbers in the low tens to hundreds remaining, and a complete disappearance from Bali. They have vanished because of the wild bird trade. The World Parrot Trust is participating in the conservation of the Mitchell’s Lorikeet with partner Friends of the National Park Foundation (FNPF) in Indonesia, helping with releases of several birds on the island of Nusa Penida. WPT will continue to help this subspecies by:
- funding census work
- installing nest box to increase breeding
- aid the release of confiscated or captive raised birds into the wild
