Story

Thanks for visiting my page!

I am about to embark upon a challenge that would make one think, why on earth would you do such a thing (pls see below for the answer)  The Brecon Challenge, October 3rd 2009, Wales.

What's it all about you ask?

The challenge is a kind of all-action, super-hero triathlon (biking, hiking and canoeing): I have two weeks to train and four weeks to meet my fundraising target. So please help!

On this adventure I will be in a team of four. We will will cycle woodland trails, scale the highest peak in south west Wales and canoe the Pentwyn Reservoir. We will need mental stamina, physical fitness a strong team spirit to complete three distinct challenges in less than 12 hours.

The event includes:

a 16km trek to reach the top of Pen-y-fan where you will enjoy magnificent views of the Brecon Beacons

a 35km bike ride along a section of the Taff Trail

a three hour paddle across Pentwyn Reservoir

Exercising for 12 hours staright does not sounds like fun, so Why on earth would I do such a thing?

The cause:

This challenge is so much more than the sheer physical pain that I will experience, it is about the cause, VSO. (voluntary services overseas).

Since 1958 VSO has been sending volunteers to fight global poverty by sharing their skills and experience with people in developing countries. As a direct result of their work, there are now women and men able to make a living, children getting a quality education, AIDS orphans being looked after in their own community and disabled people living full lives.

Here is an example of the long lasting impact that we have made in Ethiopia in one of VSO's goal area of education:

VSO Case study: Ethiopia

2 volunteers devised and implemented the ‘Higher National Diploma’ - a scheme to improve the professional skills of teacher trainers

They visited every college and university in the country

In just two years:

1,363 Ethiopian teacher trainers completed the diploma

11,000 local teachers were trained

800,000 children will have benefited
