Fundraising for Versus Arthritis
Story

On Sunday 19th September after nine months of learning to ride a road bike, drastically improving my swimming and going from a 2 mile jog around the woods with the dog to a 10 – 13 mile run (which the dog refuses to join me on) I will line up in the New Forest Middle Distance Triathlon as one of the 450 competitors. The course as the name would suggest is in the and takes the form of a 1.9km Swim, followed by a 90km bike ride and finished off with a 21km run.
Although there is no official charity linked to the triathlon and given that I’m entering with the intention of surviving and not winning (I’d have to improve my predicted overall time by at least 2 hours for that to happen), I have decided to use the experience to raise money for Arthritis Research .
Arthritis Research is committed to funding research into finding a cure for Arthritis which is a condition that affects over 10 million people in the and roughly equates to 1 in 6 of the population. I have experienced first hand the affects that Arthritis has on members of my family. My mother was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis 7 years ago which has resulted in a marked decrease in her mobility and radical change in life style. My Grandmother has Osteoarthritis giving her almost continuous pain and discomfort.
Arthritis Research is the leading research charity in this country. It is currently funding research grants to try and achieve its goal of finding cures for Arthritis while at the same time acting as a pressure group to get the best treatment to patients that science can provide at the soonest time.
Through competing in the New Forest Middle Distance Triathlon covering the 70.3 miles through water, on wheels and on foot I hope I can do my bit towards easing the everyday pain and discomfort experienced by Arthritis sufferers by hopefully raising funds for this worthy charity.
