Story
In February I will be cycling 470km from Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam to Angkor Wat in Siem Reap, Cambodia, to raise money to support an excellent charity called MAG (Mines Advisory Group).
MAG is close to my heart not only because I now live, work and travel in South East Asia, where land-mines continue to injure and kill people, but also because I come from the north-west of England where the charity is based. It's hard to believe that there are still so many mines in this part of the world, causing such massive damage.
MAG consults with local communities and works to lessen the threat of death and injury from land-mines and unexploded ordnance, while releasing reclaimed and safe land and other vital resources back to the local population, helping countries to rebuild and develop their social and economic potential.
In Vietnam, MAG is the largest non-military land-mine clearance organisation. In Cambodia MAG has pioneered the locality demining approach, recruiting deminers from the poorest communities, and is working on innovative strategies for more targeted clearance across the whole country.
