Story

In October I will complete the Scouse 5K in order to raise money for the Fibrous Dysplasia Support Society.

I first became noticeably ill when I was 13 years old, it took 3 years to find out the cause of my pain and when I was 16 I was diagnosed with Fibrous Dysplasia in my skull. It subsequently took 4 more years until I had any form of treatment for the condition because doctors had never heard of the illness and didn’t understand what it was. The past 7 years have been difficult with pain every single day, I am keeping my fingers crossed that this new treatment will make a difference and I will be able to return to my healthy old self!

Fibrous Dysplasia prevents bones maturing into a solid state, leaving it in a weak, misshapen fibrous stage which is prone to fractures. The illness is exceptionally painful and sadly there is no cure, however certain treatments are known to reduce pain. Personally I have experienced migraines every day for the past 4 years with various other symptoms such as dizziness and double vision, it has prevented me from living life to its fullest.

The society works to raise awareness, and I’m hoping through this fundraising, more medics will become aware of the condition, and as a result, fewer people will suffer unnecessarily due to lack of knowledge and treatment.

Thank you so much for your support! Xxx

About the charity

The Fibrous Dysplasia Support Society (FDSS) was formed in 2007 by a group of patients, and their carers, who are affected by Fibrous Dysplasia, McCune Albright Syndrome (MAS) or Cherubism. It exists to provide information and support by sharing our knowledge and experience of the condition.
