A severe food crisis is unfolding in Niger. Poor rains in 2009, leading to a 30% reduction in harvest, and high food prices have left over 7 million people short of food and hungry. As reported on the BBC
http://tempuri.org/tempuri.htmlThis sort of thing should not happen in an age where so many people have much more than they need. It’s time for us to act and this time we don’t need any pop stars to tell us the reality of this crisis.
We are aiming to raise £150,000 to help the people of Niger help themselves. £150,000 can help to provide clean, easily accessible drinking water to a district of approximately 10,000 people.
The project, implemented by Islamic Relief involves the drilling of nine deep borehole wells, installed with foot pumps to serve small to medium sized villages as well as a solar powered water system to serve the largest village of the district. The water system includes a water pump, which pumps the water to a large tank, from which water is pushed through underground piping to numerous water points in the village. In addition, an irrigation system can be established to help with farming.
