Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
As you know my Dad, Rob Champion, passed away recently from cancer. He was a keen cyclist and in recent years spent much of his spare time doing up old bikes in his 'man cave' bike shed in his garden! He would give them to local kids on the estate near to his home and also to family and friends. Some of the children he helped with their bikes were at the funeral and were distraught. It was only then I realised that my dad didn't just give them a bike that they otherwise couldn't have afforded, he had become a friend and role model. My dad didn't 'do' regrets but told me he was sad that he didn't get to fulfil a recently formed ambition to do up bikes for charity to send to Africa.
When I was looking for a suitable charity to fundraise for, the Margaret Carey Foundation couldn't have been a better fit. Not only do they do up bikes to send to South Africa, a place my Dad loved and spent a lot of time, they also train prisoners to do the bike repairs.. One of my passions! It gives them skills to find employment on release, as well as enabling them to give back to society by helping deprived families in the UK and South Africa have bikes and wheel chairs they have repaired.
My Dad and I took part in the Wiggle Ups and Downs Sportive Dorking 2015 (see the photo!) and this year my Partner Robert Norville and I will ride on the same bikes my dad left us in his memory.
Thank you so much for your support.
