Story

No mean Feet !

In April 2011 I will be taking part in the des Sables on behalf of Mencap. I have 2 goals, firstly to raise £9,500 for Mencap and secondly to complete this challenge of a lifetime!

The Marathon des Sables is a 152 mile multi stage marathon, run over 6 days in the at a time of year when temperatures often exceed 100 degrees fahrenheit. It is dubbed the toughest foot race in the world! Participants are required to be self sufficient, which means I will not only be running the distance but am also expected to carry all my food, cooking equipment and clothing for the week.

You may ask why any sane person would do this? Well in August 2008 I was diagnosed with testicular cancer. This was a life changing moment for me and I decided to not only reflect on and re-evaluate my priorities in life, but also to start achieving the challenges and goals that I had set myself. In this regard, I decided I’d spent enough time dreaming about taking part in this event and before I could change my mind, I decided to enter it. Life, I had realised, is short and fragile and when my entry was accepted I grasped the opportunity with both hands.

I want to be part of something extraordinary and Mencap has allowed me to do that. Mencap is a charity supporting people with learning disabilities as well as their families and carers. They work with people of all ages, providing services tailored to individual needs.

I’m doing my bit by running the des Sables, and raising the much needed funds on behalf of Mencap, and only ask that YOU show your support and generosity for such a worthy cause by making your donation today.
