Hello

Update: We did it! What a wonderful five days of pilgrimage. Many thanks to everyone who sponsored me, and if you are here for the first time, it’s not too late. 

Finally the time has come! Postponed from March because of Covid, the pilgrimage is now from 2 - 9 October. I leave at 4.15 am on Saturday. We are walking an average of 23 kilometres a day for five days, and the weather forecast is….wet, pretty much every day. I’ll post photos on my Facebook page and Instagram @philippa.king. Many thanks to all who have sponsored me. I have reached my fundraising target but you can definitely still give!

I am doing this trek/pilgrimage with Traidcraft  because I want to do something about trade justice. It’s a reason to ask you to do something about it too, so please sponsor me. 

I’ve supported Traidcraft since the 80s and the need is just as great now, if not even more so. You probably read, like I did, that when Covid-19 meant shops in Western countries closed, it was the factory workers at the far end of the supply chain that suffered most, as orders were cancelled and the people who had already made the clothes didn’t get paid. That’s not fair! 

So Traidcraft Exchange campaigns and advocates for trade justice, but also helps groups of farmers or workers in different parts of the world to organise and get a better deal, and more rights. I particularly like their current emphases on empowering women, and on climate-resilient agriculture. Again, we aren’t the ones who are suffering most from the climate emergency.

Anyway, I’m really delighted to be walking the last 100K of this Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, in southern Spain, to raise money for this excellent cause. It will be a lot of walking, and it is likely to rain everyday, but it will be a good challenge. Like a lot of my friends, I’m pretty focused on local needs in my everyday life, so this is a reason for me, and hopefully you, to think about some of the bigger global injustices - and do something about them.  I’m paying for my travel etc. myself, so everything you donate will go to Traidcraft Exchange.
