We help Deaf and hard of hearing people to live confidently with their hearing loss

Story

Over the last few years I've cycled and run for charity but never walked, so 2020 would have been my year to walk and raise money for a great cause. Alas a world pandemic got in the way.

So on the 16th September '2022', I will be setting off on our rearranged trip to Scotland ready to start the ascent up Ben Nevis on the Saturday morning - I understand it can still be snowy up the top, hopefully not in September! Next we'll be hopping back down to England to attempt Scafell Pike - word on the street is it's VERY steppy! And finally, on Sunday morning we'll be hoping to finish our challenge with the tallest peak in Wales, Snowdon. In total we'll be climbing 9,843ft of vertical ascent in just 24 hours!

I've chosen to take on this Three Peak Challenge in aid of GDA, a charity that is working to break down barriers for people living with deafness.

Deafness is a very misunderstood condition that can bring a world of isolation and loneliness. The reality is that no-one dies from deafness but the truth is that the impact it can have on a person's physical and mental wellbeing can be devastating.

  • The number of young deaf men committing suicide is worringly on the increase.
  • Deaf people are twice as likely to develop mental health issues such as depression and anxiety compared to hearing people.
  • 40% of children with permanent childhood deafness have a range of additional and complex needs including problems such as autism and learning difficulties
  • Hearing loss is associated with an increased risk of developing dementia in over 60 year olds.
  • Deaf children are less likely to achieve five A* to C grades in GCSE's compared to their hearing peers

GDA provides practical and emotional support that enables a person to live confidently with their hearing loss, to be part of mainstream society and to have a voice. But it can't continue to offer such vital and life-changing without our support.
