Story
Thanks for visiting this page. Please give generously. Every £5 gets the bus closer to Siret. £50 gets us an overnight stay. We will take students from Douzelage towns to Siret.
Siret, is the Douzelage partner town in Romania and in 1990 it had a very large orphanage which featured in the “Challenge Anneka” series. It had hundreds of children in it and conditions were appalling. Time has moved on and a lot of good work has been done, but Siret is left with a residential psychiatric hospital whose patients were children of the orphanage. Considerable effort is given to the care and rehabilitation of these “young people” but it is a continuous struggle.
To help provide an improved life for the residents of the hospital they need transport to get them to treatments, activities and social events. Please help provide a minibus to get these patients a better life. This minibus could also be used to transport sports teams and other poor children of the town to social and sporting activities.
When we get funds for the minibus then Sherborne Douzelage members will drive it to Siret in April 2015, collecting young people from Partner towns en route. This will help build youth understanding of cultural differences and be part of a multi-national team building activity that we are appealing for organisations and individuals to be part of.
In 2013 Douzelage has donated some small amounts of money to help the hospital and town and significantly helped to obtain funds to install a heating system in the hospital main units. This was done by working through UK and Romanian MEP’s who were able to influence the Romanian Ministry of Health to release fund for this.
The journey is 2015 miles and the cost to purchase a reasonable bus and get it to Romania is about £10,075; therefore every £5 donation gets us closer to our target. Some £3,000 of this will be raised by other towns. Sherborne also has some off line fundraising activities, like the Romanian evening on 5th December.
