Story
Taking place at the end of July, the Lakeland 100 'Ultra Tour of the Lake District' encompasses the whole of the lakeland fells, includes in the region of 6300m of ascent and consists almost entirely of public bridleways and footpaths. The looped route starts (and finishes) in Coniston.
The event is continuous in nature, competitors don't have to stop or sleep on the route and the winners are generally expected to finish close to the 20 hour mark. The overall time available for the route is 40 hours. This will be my second running of the event - in 2017 I finished in just over 29 hours.
Oldham Mountain Rescue Team is a voluntary organisation whose objective is “to save life and alleviate distress, primarily in upland and mountain areas” without cost or obligation.
The team of 50+ volunteers provide a professional rescue service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
A range of specialist equipment is used including rescue equipment; medical equipment and vehicles (even a boat). This all costs money and needs to be maintained and replaced. The team is funded almost entirely by generous public donation.
