Story

Noel was diagnosed with a rare, early onset dementia -- Posterior Cortical Atrophy (PCA) -- in 2012. The diagnosis gave a name to the issues we were seeing, but as with all brain diseases the journey we embarked on was far from smooth.

Noel passed through stages of physical and mental change, each more cruel and invasive than the last. These were deeply troubling for Noel and his family as we adjusted to the new normal, only to have to adjust again and again.

PCA slowly robbed Noel of his mobility, vitality, and dignity, finally taking his life on September 11th this year at the age of 72. We are incredibly sad at his passing, but so relieved that he is finally at peace.

All consultants, specialists, and staff at the Dementia Research Centre provided outstanding care and the most amazing support network for Noel, his family, and friends. We could not have managed this journey without their invaluable encouragement, advice, and involvement.

Rare Dementia Support provides specialist support services for individuals living with, or affected by, a rare dementia diagnosis. We have developed many wonderful friends through this network, sharing experiences, helpful hints, and love among the group.

Please consider making a donation in honour of Noel to continue the work of Rare Dementia Support. Our final request is that you remember Noel as the man pictured above -- happy, handsome, and with that great smile and twinkle in his eye!
