We support people ill from asbestos to improve lives of those with Mesothelioma

Story

We have created this page to donate to HASAG in memory of a wonderful Husband, Dad, Grandad and Brother.

Roger was diagnosed with Mesothelioma, in October 2011.  Mesothelioma is a terminal cancer that affects the pleura (surface lining of the lung cavity).  As this is an asbestos related cancer, we believe he contracted this whilst working in the building trade during the 1960’s. There is a lack of funding for this industrial disease and more research needs to be done, as it is estimated that in the next 30-40 years at least 70,000 people will be diagnosed with this disease from past exposure to asbestos.  It doesn’t just affect people in the building industry it affects the even more unexpected sufferers such as teachers, doctors and nurses who have also suffered from this disease by working in buildings that have asbestos materials in them. If you stop and think we probably all know someone working in those sectors. Sadly, we even know of a housewife who was diagnosed with this terrible disease following the unsuspecting, simple and innocent act of shaking out her husbands work clothes before laundering them at home, frightening isn’t it?

Throughout Roger’s treatment his will to live and spend as long as possible with his family, especially his grandchildren, was something that can only be admired. He took part in many trials to ensure he could help any future sufferers; this small contribution is a commendable legacy of support that he and we all can be proud of.

There are not enough words to describe the way in which this disease takes you, it cruelly twists you, breaks you, is unforgiving and relentlessly shows no mercy. For those of you who knew Roger well, will know he was only ever thinking of his family and having more time with them. With humility on his face and often seen composing himself in pain, he never once complained.  As witnesses to the suffering of this dignified and brave man, we feel this cancerous disease should not go understated just because it doesn’t share the headlines with more common cancers. This wonderful man was taken from us too early and suffered greatly in his last few months. Harsh as that may be to consume, we really feel awareness is required and therefore we would so very much like your support to help a cause Roger really was so grateful for, a support group and charity which offered him great reassurance and comfort in finding peace of mind upon him no longer being here.

Roger was such an important person in all of our lives impacting us in different ways; and although we can no longer all be together he will remain in our hearts forever.

Thank you very much for your donation. This gesture, however big or small, will live beyond the stems of roses and support so many families as it did ours. It really means so much to us and to Hampshire Asbestos Support (HASAG).
