Story
The scale of the humanitarian Syrian refugee crisis is at level that is unimaginable. Three years since the conflict began more Syrians are now displaced than any other nationality in the world, says the UNHCR.
I am targeting to raise £10,000 by supporting SKT Welfare (100% donation policy) in building a water well in the Qah refugee camp located in Idlib, northwest Syria. It is hard for us to imagine how hard life would be without clean running water, but for thousands of Syrians this has been a part of their reality for three years.
Some facts:
9 million Syrians have been displaced by the fighting (some put the estimate at 11 million) — 6.5 million within Syria, and 2.5 million as refugees in neighbouring countries
Three quarters of refugees are women and children
There are over 1.1million child refugees
70,000 Syrian refugee children are living without their fathers
A further 3,700 children have had both their parents killed or imprisoned, or been separated from them as they fled the war according to a UN report (these figures are likely to be much higher)
Refugee children are at risk of becoming ill, malnourished, abused, or exploited. Millions have been forced to quit school
Women are suffering from domestic violence and other abuse in refugee camps
£10,000 will help to build one well, after which it will cost 50p (per litre of diesel) per hour to sustain. In 1 minute the well can pump 85 litres of water resulting in approximately 5,000 litres of water per hour. The well produce 30,000 litres of water a day serving thousands of people in the refugee camp.
