In 2016 I am running the London Marathon for Worldwide Cancer Research. I’m doing it as part of a team – a bunch of wonderful people from STAART who I met at Park Run.

I know what some people might say – I’ve done a couple of marathons before, often doing daft long distance events, what’s the big deal about this one, why should you sponsor me?

Well here’s why:

1. Awesome cause. Worldwide Cancer Research? Does this even need an explanation or justification? Further to them doing amazing work, it is a local charity, based in St Andrews, and we’re thrilled to support them.
2. It doesn’t matter how many marathons you do they are always hard, and you don’t just turn up on the day and jog round, you commit to several months dedicated training to ready yourself. It is life consuming.
3. It gets harder as you get older. I have to reluctantly admit, I am getting older.
4. I’ve put on a few pounds recently, and it’s much harder when you’re fatter.
5. As I’ve become older and fatter, I’ve also become slower, and I’m going to be trying for a PB, so that’s hard.
6. I have multiple problems with my feet, that are getting worse, and it is very painful for me to run longer than about 90 minutes. 2016 will be the year I retire from marathons because this pain will soon be unbearable. But for now I will persevere in the name of Cancer Research! That deserves a tenner or two right?!
7. Have I mentioned that it’s hard?
8. Also it’s hard.
9. Finally, it’s not the only thing I’m committing to in 2016. Worldwide Cancer Research needs to collect the money in time for the marathon in April, but if you don’t want to sponsor me for that, maybe spare me a tenner for the Ironman I’m signed up for in October and keep me guilted into doing it. Oh, did I not mention that yet? That’s a 2.4 mile swim, followed by a 112 mile bike ride, followed by a marathon. Now that really is hard.

Our team fundraising target is £15,000, so please please please take pity on me and chuck a few quid my way! I’ll love you forever! xxx
