Our team of six - Gary, Sarah, Sarah, Mike, David and Nick - are aiming to raise over £50,000 for Doctors in Distress and The Intensive Care Society by taking on the famous 'Patrouille des Glaciers Route' challenge for ICU heroes.

Story

The pandemic has a lot to answer for. It has rocked the heart of the community, our lives and our world. The challenge of working in ICU in normal times can be stressful but nothing could have prepared us for the events which unfolded in March 2020.

As a Consultant in Intensive Care, I have been amazed and grateful for the resilience, support and teamwork I’ve had around me. I have marvelled at my colleagues; nurse, doctors, Allied Health Professionals, the whole Team, the ‘can do’ attitudes and the ability to just keep going. But the last 18 months has taken an enormous toll on us.

I’m absolutely thrilled, delighted (and just a lot nervous) to be chosen to join ‘Team Zermatt to Verbier 2022’.

We’re a team of six individuals, and we’re taking on the gruelling ‘Patrouille des Glaciers Route’ (PDG), one of the toughest ski mountaineering courses in the world It covers a 57.5km route at altitudes of up to 13,000ft from Zermatt to Verbier in the Swiss Alps. Over the five days the team I will face the risk of avalanches, the hazards of glacier crossing, freezing temperatures and altitude sickness..

For me, physical, emotional and mental health go hand in hand together; and I know I’m a better mum, wife, daughter, clinician and friend when I work at them. So the chance to raise funds for the ‘Intensive Care Society’ & ‘Doctors in Distress’ comes as an incredibly exciting, personally rewarding, yet enormously challenging opportunity.

I hope that you will be able to support us on this journey to say thank you. 100% of all sponsorship will be divided between the chosen charities that support mental health initiatives for all frontline NHS staff.

I know my colleagues at 'The Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine' & ‘The Intensive Care Society’ are right behind us in their support. We are collectively united, determined to look after each other, our wellbeing and our amazing workforce. I hope you will support me in fulfilling my personal challenge, and dig deep to help us achieve our target.
